Andrew Bowled Over By Award Win
We were very proud this week when Account Manager Andrew Butcher revealed to the office that he had won the Mistley Cricket Club Captain’s Award – for contribution to the club for his work off the field.
Mistley Cricket Captain Bruce Leeke, who is also chief of Suffolk Libraries in his spare time, says: “It was a very well deserved and an easy choice. Andy is a top man who gives a lot back for other people.”
Having had a fairly average season on the pitch, I was surprised but very proud to receive an award. I have been involved with the club for over 20 years. As I have started to mature in years, I have found myself getting more involved off the field. It was really nice to be recognised for the work that I enjoy putting in.Andrew Butcher
Alongside captaining, which in cricket really means managing, the club’s third XI, Andrew also contributes heavily in the clubs media department (made up mainly of himself!). This includes the introduction of the club’s popular e-newsletter which boasts an average open rate of 64%. As well as gradually revamping the club’s branding, various press and social media responsibilities. Over the coming months, Andrew will be building the club a new website. He hopes that this will help them to continue to thrive in changing times.
Amateur cricket has found itself in a tough place in recent years. Participation levels are dropping steadily since the turn of the century. Statistics released in 2016 revealed the only 278,600 people in the UK regularly played cricket. That’s almost half of the number playing 20 years previously!
Andrew, 30, is delighted to be involved in a club that bucks the trend. He says: “The club is very lucky to have some fantastic volunteers who dedicate many hours to the club throughout the year. This contributes to fantastic facilities and a burgeoning youth setup. However, the average age of volunteers and players keeps rising. It falls the players of my generation to get involved to make sure the game is still flourishing for cricket lovers of the future!”
